Pebble Hypnotherapy Blog The Power Of Our Words
Next time you’re trying something new, ask yourself, ‘What’s the BEST that could happen?’ I think you’ll love how it feels!

We all know the nursery rhyme ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me’ but the truth is, our words are incredibly powerful. They act as instructions to our subconscious and can lead to success or failure in our endeavours. In fact, words form the basis of hypnotherapy, and the right words will be absorbed by the subconscious during the trance stage of a session to bring about powerful behaviour change.

I always tell my clients to look at the words they use, because our brains will believe what we tell them, and we can create positive or negative expectations for ourselves through the words we choose. This really came home to me recently when I heard someone use that very British phrase; ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ Although this was meant to be encouraging, it made me think, why do we think about the worst-case scenario? What about the best? Really, when we use this phrase it’s generally because we want something to change, maybe a new job or to try out a new hobby, and in fact, we are doing that because we want the best, don’t we? We’re just scared to admit it, and some kind of superstition compels us to lower our sights and prepare for the worst.

However, research has shown that when we do this, our brains respond, Cognitive Neuroscientist Sara Bengtsson’s research demonstrated that when we are told we will do well in a task our brains respond differently from the brains of people told they would struggle. Our brains literally look for ways to succeed! In fact, it was enough to prime people with the word “clever” to make them score higher on a rule-learning task.

So next time you’re trying something new, ask yourself, ‘What’s the BEST that could happen?’ I think you’ll love how it feels!
