So many of us have situations that still make us feel sad or upset, years afterwards, and think that we just have to put up with it, but Blast is teaching me that we really don’t!
The word ‘Trauma’ is used quite a lot, and most of us understand when events have felt traumatic, but we’re not always very good at recognising when past experiences are still affecting us. I frequently hear clients say things like ‘it was a long time ago, I should be over it by now!’ but if something has been traumatic, we’re not always able to process the memory. Sometimes, if those experiences are highly emotionally charged, the memory of them effectively gets stuck, meaning that when they’re triggered again in everyday life the experience can feel as though it’s happening again. This seems to occur more when the events were unexpected and overwhelming, causing us to freeze, and putting us into a state of shock. So you can see that this could relate to many different situations, from those things that we traditionally label as ‘traumatic’ such as being involved in a car accident, right through to the kinds of things we think we should find easier to get over, such as bullying (this is sometimes called small t trauma). These things can impact in so many areas, including self-confidence and low self-esteem, or difficulties in specific areas such as driving, flying or speaking in public.
Over the past few months, I’ve been using a new technique called Blast® that uses bi-lateral eye stimulation to help clients process these stuck memories, and the effects have been highly effective, and very quick! For example, a client with a fear of flying who has been able to process the memories of 2 very difficult flights and feel much calmer.
