Since 2001 The Mental Health Foundation have designated a week in May as Mental Health Awareness Week. This year it will run from 11 -17th May. The theme for this year is ‘Action’ and I’m interested to know what this means to you? Do you think about physical activity, decision-making? Or something else altogether?
In my sessions, action takes a starring role! I talk about the ‘4 Ps’: Positive action, interaction, thinking and purpose, and we also explore what small actions you might take to help you to feel better, whether that’s doing something, or doing nothing! The tiny positive actions we take build up into the change that we’re looking for. There’s a lovely analogy I like to use of adding a pebble to a jar – that one pebble is quite light and insignificant, but if we did that every day, by the end of the month the jar would be really heavy!
Since Mental Health Awareness week started, our approach to Mental Health has changed significantly, with a growing awareness of the importance of maintaining positive Mental Health for everyone, both personally and in work settings rather than seeing Mental Health only through a lens of illness.
There are many ways to maintain your positive mental health, and how we choose to do that is very personal to us. For me, getting outside every day really helps and exercise has been demonstrated to have a significant impact on our Mental Health, whether that means a session in the gym or just a walk with the dog. Prioritising good sleep is another area that is so important when we talk about Mental Health, and poor sleep is often one of the symptoms I see in my clinic and is often the first thing that changes when clients come to see me. Disordered sleep can make us feel really low and we can struggle to cope, but hypnotherapy is a great way to get this, and many other areas of our health and wellbeing, back on track. If you’d like to know more, or just want to ask a question, please get in touch.
