Anxiety: Recognising the Symptoms and Taking the First Step Towards Peace of Mind
Anxiety: Recognising the Symptoms and Taking the First Step Towards Peace of Mind

Anxiety is something that affects many of us at different times in our lives, and in recent years many more people report feeling anxious: according to the Mental Health Foundation in 2022/23, an average of 37% of women and 30% of men reported high levels of anxiety.

Whether it’s a fleeting sensation before a big event or a persistent feeling that lingers throughout the day, understanding anxiety and its symptoms is the first step in managing it effectively.

What Is Anxiety?

At its core, anxiety is a natural response to stress or perceived danger. It’s your body’s way of preparing you to deal with a challenge. However, when feelings of anxiety become overwhelming or don’t seem to go away, even when the threat has passed, they can start to interfere with daily life.

Common Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety doesn’t look the same for everyone. Here are some of the most common ways it can manifest:

  • Excessive worrying – Constantly feeling anxious about things that may seem minor to others.

  • Panic attacks – Sudden, intense feelings of fear or dread that can be very distressing.

  • Sleep problems – Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or feeling rested.

  • Breathlessness – Feeling like you can’t catch your breath, even when at rest.

  • Nausea – An uneasy stomach or feeling sick without a clear cause.

  • Overthinking – Going over situations in your mind repeatedly.

  • Procrastination – Putting things off because the thought of starting feels overwhelming.

  • Difficulty concentrating – Struggling to focus on tasks at hand.

  • Inability to relax – Always feeling “on edge” or unable to unwind.

  • Physical symptoms – Such as headaches, stomach aches, or back pain without a medical explanation.

Things that can help

  • Talking about it – Sharing your feelings with trusted friends or family can lighten the load.

  • Staying active – Gentle exercise, like walking or yoga, can help reduce stress.

  • Getting outside – Our natural environment can have a calming effect on the body and mind.

  • Practise mindfulness – Techniques such as meditation or breathing exercises can calm the mind.

  • Look after your body – Eating well and getting enough rest supports good mental health.

If these strategies aren’t enough, and your anxiety is impacting your daily life, get in touch. Hypnotherapy can really help clients to manage and reduce the symptoms of anxiety, allowing you to feel calm and relaxed again.
